Quest Vintela Authentication Services (VAS) by Quest Software is an enterprise solution that integrates Unix, Linux, and macOS systems with Microsoft Active Directory to provide unified, centralized authentication and access control. By leveraging open standards such as Kerberos, LDAP, PAM, and NSS, it delivers secure single sign-on and enforces consistent password, lockout, and account policies across heterogeneous environments.
VAS enables non-Windows hosts to join an Active Directory domain and use existing AD users and groups for authentication and authorization, reducing the need for local accounts or separate directories like NIS. It supports Unix identity mapping through RFC 2307/Services for UNIX attributes and can operate without AD schema changes in many deployments. The platform also extends AD-style policy management to Unix systems, helping centralize common configurations such as sudo and SSH settings.
The result is simpler administration, improved security, and a consistent user experience across platforms. VAS was later rebranded as Quest Authentication Services, reflecting its broader cross-platform identity and policy management capabilities.
